The First Baptist Church of Evans, Georgia was founded on August 10, 1930. It was formed to create a Baptist church in a rural community. Over the years the community has grown until now our campus is at the main crossroads of Evans in one of the fastest-growing counties in Georgia. Our campus occupies the south corner of North Belair and Washington Roads, the two major commuter arteries in east Columbia County. Our original neighbors were pecan groves and farmland, but now we are adjacent to the Evans Towne Center Shopping Center and across the street from Lowes, Home Depot, Food Lion, and Cracker Barrel.
Although we are part of a traditional Southern community, First Baptist Church of Evans has been progressive in some ways. During the civil rights movement in the 1960s, we were one of the first churches in our community to welcome racial integration in worship and in membership. In the 1970s we were the first Baptist church in the Augusta area, as far as we know, to elect and ordain women to the diaconate.
While we have a long history in this community, our congregation is not tradition-bound. The lifelong Evans residents among us have embraced the "newcomers" who've moved here to work at Fort Gordon, Savannah River Site, the medical facilities, and the other industrial, educational, and commercial employers in our area.
The First Baptist Church of Evans partners with the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, the Southern Baptist Convention, and the Augusta Association of Baptist Churches. We are a fellowship of believers who profess Christ as Lord and Savior. We are committed to His commandment: "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and all your strength, and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself." (Luke 10:27)
We have a prime location within the community, unequaled opportunities as a church, and a determination to make an eternal difference in our community. We believe that God has located the First Baptist Church of Evans in this place "for such a time as this."
